Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 156,000 in December, and the unemployment ratewas little changed at 4.7 percent. The labor force participation rate, at 62.7 percent, changed little in December and wasunchanged over the year.
Average earnings rose to $26.00 per hour in December, up 2.9 percent year-on-year
December average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrollsincreased by 10 cents to $26.00. Over the year, average hourly earnings have risen by 2.9 percent.
November factory orders fell for first time in four months
Orders to U.S. factories fell for the first time in five months in November by 2.4 percent,but much of the weakness reflected a swing in the volatile category of commercial aircraft.
Manufacturing sector index rose to 54.7 percent in December, a high for 2016
The December PMI® registered 54.7 percent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the November reading of 53.2 percent. The PMI®, New Orders, Production and Employment Indexes all registered new highs for the year 2016, and the forward-looking comments from the panel are largely positive.
Service sector economy remained steady at 57.2 percent in December
The NMI® registered 57.2 percent in December, matching the November figure. The non-manufacturing sector closed out the year strong maintaining its rate of growth month-over-month.
