Marina, California, September 8, 2014 – Shea Properties and Cinemark Holdings, Inc., parent company of Century Theatres, announced plans today to bring a state-of-the-art, 5-screen, digital cinema to The Dunes on Monterey Bay shopping venue.
For Marina Community Partners, which oversees the master-planned community, the addition of Century Theatres is an important next step for The Dunes’ retail expansion as Marina continues to become an entertainment destination for the Peninsula.
“We are excited to bring Century Theatres to The Dunes” said Jeff Melrose, vice president of development for Shea Properties. “This will be a great addition to Marina, which is becoming recognized as one of the best places locally to enjoy a great entertainment and shopping experience.”
The new Century NextGen Theatre at the Dunes Shopping Center offers the newest technology, cutting edge amenities and customer-preferred options all under one roof. Every auditorium in the theatre complex offers a state-of-the-art viewing environment with wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor screens, Barco DLP projectors, RealD 3D versatility and 7.1 JBL sound systems. The theatre will also feature a Cinemark XD: Extreme Digital Cinema auditorium. It is scheduled to open in summer 2015, just in time for the traditional blockbuster season.
“The addition of Century Theatres to The Dunes on Monterey Bay is a huge win for the community,” said Wendy Elliott, community development manager for Marina Community Partners. “This entertainment venue will also draw in a variety of shops, services and restaurants to be developed around the Town Square.”
Adjacent to the California State University Monterey Bay campus, The Dunes Town Square and the new Cinemark Theatres are expected to become an important off campus benefit to the school. The Dunes on Monterey Bay is anchored by Target, and includes Kohl’s, REI, Best Buy, Old Navy, Michael’s, Famous Footwear, Party City and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
The State of California designated The Dunes project as a silver level Catalyst Community for demonstrating a commitment to sustainable communities by incorporating innovative strategies designed to increase housing supply and affordability; improve jobs and housing relationships; stimulate job creation and retention; enhance transportation modal choices and more. The project will generate nearly 800 direct and indirect construction jobs with a $33 million annual payroll. By 2020, The Dunes is expected to yield several thousand permanent jobs with a $193 million annual payroll.
