Construction, Manufacturing in Demand as Openings Remain High

Job openings and hiring dipped slightly in August, but individual industries across the U.S. economy still managed to post performances at or near all-time highs, according to new data published Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau’s monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary showed employers’ vacancies in August edge down to 6.1 million, while hiring slipped to 5.4 million. That marks the metrics’ softest showings since May and April, respectively, though the downturn belies what was otherwise a solid month for recruitment in the U.S.
