Salt Lake City, Utah (December 17, 2020) – Land Advisors Organization’s Salt Lake City office announces the completion of the donation of a 413-acre parcel along the shore of the Great Salt Lake to Audubon’s Gillmor Sanctuary by Epperson LLC. The land donation allows for the protection and restoration of the parcel’s valuable shorebird habitat and wetlands, while also protecting water flow into the Audubon sanctuary. The donation was recorded on December 15, 2020.
The donation, coordinated by Maureen Davison and Zachary “Zach” Hartman of Land Advisors Organization’s Salt Lake City office, marks the culmination of a years-long effort to preserve the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake. The process involved insuring the protection of environmentally sensitive lands during the discussions with Ella Sorenson of Audubon and Salt Lake City’s leadership. Salt Lake City’s work with the landowners in creating a General Plan and establishing a vision for the land that was supported by the state of Utah through the Department of Facility and Construction Management and the state legislature.
“It has been a career highlight to work with Maureen and the numerous groups involved in this project to preserve this and other land around the Great Salt Lake,” said Zach Hartman of Land Advisors Organization’s Salt Lake City office. “Although it was a long process, everyone involved worked very hard and the result is a remarkable gift to all Utahans. I can only hope the Inland Port can live up to the goals set by the landowners, Salt Lake City, and state legislature.”
Audubon and Epperson have worked together in the past. In 2005, Epperson donated a canal right-of-way easement, which allows water to flow into the sanctuary and sustain its critical habitat for countless shorebirds. With the new donation of these 413-acres, which contains portions of the ancient Jordan River delta, the water delivery system of the sanctuary is now protected, and the sanctuary’s impact on wetlands along the Great Salt Lake grows. Plans for the parcel include installing water control structures to restore water flow and connectivity across the sanctuary and removing vast stands of non-native tamaris and other invasive plants to return the wetland and bird habitat to its natural state.
Zach Hartman specializes in advising private equity investors, banks, financial institutions, developers, pension funds, REITs, public entities, family offices, homebuilders and individual owners with the acquisition and disposition of Utah land assets.
